What Happens in a Kids’ Parkour Class? Safety, Games & Challenges

Ever wondered what your child actually does in a Parkour class?

At The Parkour Academy, it’s more than just jumping around—each session is carefully structured to build skill, confidence, and a love for movement in a safe and supportive environment.

Having coached Parkour to children in schools, PE lessons, and after-school clubs for over 3 years, I’ve learned how kids like and should learn.

The answer?

Through play!

Before founding The Parkour Academy, I worked at The Foucan Academy, where I was fortunate to learn directly from Sébastien Foucan (one of the founders of Parkour). The biggest lesson I took from him: children need to play. That’s why at The Parkour Academy, learning through play is at the core of every class.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what a typical class looks like 👇

💥 Warm-Up & Games

We always start with fun, parkour-themed movement games to get kids engaged and moving. It breaks the ice, helps prevent injuries, and sets a positive tone for the session.

🧗 Skill Focus

Each class has a focus—vaults, jumps, balance, or bar work. We break down techniques into simple steps and progressions so that every child can improve at their own pace.

🔁 Challenges & Obstacle Courses

No two sessions are the same. Each class might include team or individual challenges, obstacle runs, or speed courses that let kids apply what they’ve learned in a game-like format.

Example:

Last week, we ran an “A to B Floor is Lava” challenge (see photo below👇). The kids had to work as a team to get from one end of the playground to the other using just five rubber circles to step on. Once a circle was placed, it couldn’t be moved—if anyone touched the ground, the whole team started over.

‘A to B Floor is Lava Challenge’

They failed multiple times—but that was the point. It taught them problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience in a way no lecture ever could.

🙌 Teamwork & Support

One of the best parts? Watching kids cheer each other on, solve problems together, and build friendships through movement and play.

🎯 Reflection & Cool Down

We always finish by slowing things down, reviewing what we’ve worked on, and sometimes playing a fun cooldown game. We’ll often ask what their favourite part was or what they found challenging—it helps them grow not just as movers, but as people.

Their feedback also helps us understand what they enjoyed most, this allows us to tailor future sessions to better suit their interests and energy.
